Description
Von Friedrich Schiller, Namenspatron sowohl des Trägervereins als auch des dem Deutschen Literaturarchiv vorangehenden »Schiller-Museums«, stammt der historisch zentrale Bestand der Marbacher Institute. Der schriftliche Nachlass Schillers wird seit dem Jahr 1889 in Weimar verwahrt, dagegen haben sich in Marbach bereits von 1859 an allerlei Schriftstücke von, an und über Schiller angesammelt, die im Lauf der Jahrzehnte und bis heute durch Stiftungen und Zukäufe kontinuierlich vermehrt worden sind. Damit bewahrt das Deutsche Literaturarchiv neben dem Weimarer Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv die bedeutendste Überlieferung zu Friedrich Schiller überhaupt. Schillersche Werkmanuskripte sind von großer Seltenheit; dennoch liegt in Marbach u. a. eine vollständige Handschrift der Ballade Der Graf von Habsburg, Fragmente, Pläne und Schreibermanuskripte zu verschiedenen Schauspielen (etwa Don Carlos, Wallenstein, Wilhelm Tell) oder auch der berühmte Dramenplan. Briefe von und an Schiller sind in reicher Zahl vorhanden. Jenseits vieler bemerkenswerter Einzelstücke wären hier besonders die großen Korrespondenzen mit Körner und Cotta sowie der Familienbriefwechsel hervorzuheben. Erwähnenswert sind auch die Briefe an Schiller, etwa von Herder, Hölderlin oder Wilhelm von Humboldt. Zum Bestand gehören ferner biografische und wirkungsgeschichtliche Dokumente, u. a. eigene Aufzeichnungen aus der Karlsschulzeit, aber auch fremde Zeugnisse, Familienpapiere oder ganze Nachlässe aus der Verwandtschaft, ja selbst Imitationen von Schiller-Autographen (die sogenannten Gerstenbergkschen Fälschungen).
