Description
Die Porträtsammlung der Herzog August Bibliothek entstand in ihrer heutigen Form um 1970 durch Auflösung und Vereinigung von drei älteren Sammlungen der Bibliothek: einer Sammlung von Nürnberger Porträts vornehmlich des 17. Jahrhunderts (ca. 2000 dargestellte Personen, einschließlich Dubletten); der Sammlung des Wolfenbütteler Juristen Carl Gesenius, 1833 vom Bibliothekar Schönemann erworben und vermehrt, mit Gelehrtenbildnissen des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts in 56 Klebebänden; einer in 13 Mappen nach Stechern geordneten Sammlung. Alle Blätter wurden 1969-1972 und 1980-1982 restauriert und auf Karton gezogen bzw. unter Passepartout gelegt. Die Aufbewahrung erfolgt in vier verschiedenen Formaten (Format I und II = Oktav und Quart, Format III und IV = Groß- und Imperial-Folio). Die Sammlung umfasst ca. 32.000 Blätter (darunter ca. 6000 Dubletten) und enthält Blätter aller druckgraphischen Verfahren (Holzschnitt, Kupferstich, Radierung, Schabkunst, Lithographie) vom 16. Jahrhundert bis in die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, mit Schwerpunkt auf dem 17. Jahrhundert. Dargestellt sind überwiegend Gelehrte und Vertreter des Bürgertums des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts, vornehmlich aus den protestantischen deutschen Gebieten (darunter viele lutherische Theologen), ferner viele Nürnberger Patrizier und Ratsherren. Zahlreich vorhanden sind auch Fürstenbildnisse, besonders braunschweigisch-lüneburgische, brandenburgische und sächsische, sowie Abbildungen der Bischöfe von Mainz und Würzburg.
