Description
Seit der Zerstörung der Berliner Sammlung im Zweiten Weltkrieg befindet sich die größte Zahl an zeitgenössischen Lutherdrucken in Wolfenbüttel. Ohne Bibelausgaben gerechnet stehen dort fast 65 Prozent aller Ausgaben bis 1546. Sie verteilen sich hauptsächlich auf sechs unabhängig voneinander gewachsene Bestände: auf die Sammlung Herzog Augusts d.J., auf die ehemalige Helmstedter Universitätsbibliothek, auf die Sammlung Hermann von der Hardts, auf den Mittleren Bestand und die Bibelsammlung sowie auf die Fideikommiss- und Lehnsbibliothek der Familie von Alvensleben auf Erxleben, einer Leihgabe. Im Katalog beschrieben sind 1. die von Luther selbst verfassten Schriften, 2. die von ihm herausgegebenen, 3. die mit einem Vorwort von ihm versehenen und 4. die von ihm übersetzten Werke. Einige verselbständigte Vorreden ausgenommen, blieben die Bibel und ihre Teildrucke ausgeschlossen. Die chronologische Anordnung folgt der von Benzing/Claus, aber mit eigener Zählung entsprechend dem in Wolfenbüttel vorhandenen Bestand. Die Titel sind vollständig wiedergegeben. Sie folgen der Schreibweise des Originals, wobei das runde r, das lange s und das Strichkomma durch normale Formen ersetzt sind. Rotdruck ist mit [r], der Wechsel zu schwarz mit [s] angeführt. Das häufig erscheinende Blatt ist, sofern es nicht als Sonderzeichen erscheint, als mit [Spitze nach links], [Spitze nach rechts] usw. bezeichnet. Der selten gebrauchte Frakturdruck für lateinische Titel ist mit [F] vermerkt. Wie der Titel, so folgt auch das Impressum dem Original. Für jeden Druck sind die Lagen vollständig angegeben und Lesarten aufgeführt, die zur Unterscheidung zwischen Drucken dienen. Bilder werden mit der Seite vermerkt, auf der sie stehen. Eigene Druckerzuschreibungen wurden nicht vorgenommen. In Zweifelsfällen wurden die von Helmut Claus angegebenen übernommen. Jedes Exemplar eines Druckes ist mit seiner Provenienz erfaßt, aber auf die Einbände wird nur in Ausnahmefällen eingegangen. Abgesehen von der in ihre Einzelschriften zerlegten und broschierten Sammlung Hermann von der Hardts stammen fast alle Einbände aus dem 16. Jahrhundert.
